Writers with new books out should not be trusted with blogs and social media. Every impulse you have is basically starts screamingย talk about the book…talk about the book…Book! Book! Book! BOOOOOOOOOK!ย and you lose any real sense of scale you have about the line between promotion and…well, being a little sad.
So I am going to mention Exile is out and available from manyย fine perveyors of electronic reading material. And I am going to mention the interview I did with the Apocalypse Ink folksย about adapting Flotsam to a novella series and why I chose the Gold Coast as the setting.
But I’m just going to do it all subtle-like, you know? ‘Cause this post ain’t about me. It’s about you guys.I’ve got a humble request:
TELL ME ABOUT THE COOLย SHIT YOU’VE GOT GOING ON RIGHT NOW.
What have you been up to that you’re really excited about? What have you got coming up in the near future that you’re all, like, OMG THIS IS GOING TO BE ALL THE AWESOMES!ย Tell me about the books you’ve got coming out, the fitness goals you’ve just started hitting, or the thing in your life that’s bringing you joy at the moment. Pimp the shit out of your projects in the comments, if that’s your thing, ’cause right now I want to hear about other’s people’s projects and stop the obessessive mental EXILE loopย that’s going through my head.
Big or small,ย let me know. What cool shit are you up too?

Experimenting with the idea of "short stories" thanks to Jodi Cleghorn et al, all the while having some esoteric thwacks about my general writing process. Gearing up to face academia again (I survived, well, the first subject) and of course prepping to go party down, er, I mean learn heaps, at RWAustralia.
I'm so extremely pissed I'm unable to make it to RWA this year. It's the one thing I regret about having a mortgage and having to be sensible with money. Say hello to everyone for me.
Who said anything about being sensible re attending conference (I just have a very forgiving husband who kinda insists I go….not sure what his nefarious schemes for that weekend are). Will pass on the hellos for you, though I many of us have a bet I'm going to be called away by a sister claiming giving birth and needing my presence is more important than the session/function I'll be attending ๐
Powering past 300 reviews on my movie blog (only ~280 posted at the moment, but I have 30 more 'in the can'). I'm pretty pleased to have stuck to it.
You have achieved the envious "buffer against slackness." I kinda hate you a little for that ๐
Almost … almost got my translation of a 16th century French fencing textbook ready to go to press. Last line edits in progress and writing the intro. Does that count?
Dude, that's fucking awesome.
Publication display completed, the unique and endangered subtropical Peterus balli returns to his nest, which is shaped coincidentally like a trap for competing species in his niche ๐
I'm going to be in this.

And it is going to be some cool shit, that's for sure ๐
You asked for it.
Breath in. So after deciding to make a Captain America shield replica I managed to make some for other people too. Then, I gave one to this guy called Stan Lee , as a present, on stage, during his panel at a convention, which was nice. Dipped John Barrowman in my arms and went home to start making a new TARDIS. But, I got distracted by this guy from Disney, who own MARVEL, who phoned me asking to borrow my Captain America shield for a promotional TV ad with something called the NRL. So, I wiki’d the shit out of that and it turns out it’s a “sport” which is “popular”. I said yes. Then I decided to start a Mjolnir, Buffy scythe, TARDIS DVD cabinet, Captain America helmet , some SSR crates, a leather shield harness aaaand, other stuff. Oh yeah, I moved house. Tomorrow I’m gonna play Magic and boardgames and on Saturday I’m gonna be on TV and then a podcast, which sounds like fun. Did I mention Stan Lee? Oh yeah, you should totes keep an eye out for a Sci Fi radio drama called Night Terrace. Produced by some mates of mine and also because I have a couple of lines. I’m told it’s funny. It comes out I’m September. Mostly, though, right now, I miss my mate Peter and how he is never surprised by what I get up to and I want him to be here saying “yeah, that was always going to happen.”
There are things!
-Just got back from two weeks in Germany which were amazingly good personally and professionally (I did exercise and got fitter! My work performance improved and I am getting more work! I had so much fun! My German got sooooo much better!).
-I have an awesome con coming up in two weeks which I am really looking forward to.
-I'm attending weekly writing dates and have… made *some* progress on the great novel of doom? Hopefully will make more progress tonight.
I have a new dark urban fantasy series out this year in Australia and New Zealand. Book 1, BOUND, is out now in all good bookstores and in ebook. Book 2, OBSIDIAN, is out now in ebook. Book 3, ABDUCTION, is out in ebook next month. Print of 2 and 3 hopefully not far off. And hopefully elsewhere in the world not too far off either. All the details at http://www.alanbaxteronline.com
Thanks for letting us share! Good luck with Exile.
"Last Year, When We Were Young", the first collection of my published short stories (plus 2 new ones) was released last month by Satalyte Publishing. It's been doing fairly well and I've been very happy with the reviews so far… http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LDTZCA0
Some while back I got into a miniatures game called Malifaux, which I took to with a passion I thought I had pretty much lost for tabletop mini gaming. Apart from some really complex-but-elegant game mechanics, it has a great world-setting, a gorgeous fucked-up alternate-world/alt-history Dickensian/Wild-West/Steampunk/Edgar Allen Poe by way of Nick Cave/Tim Burton/Hammer Horror sort of vibe. And as of a month or so ago, I now have a gig writing for them.
Ooo, how fun! Well, I’ve got two big things I’m excited about currently–the first (and most life-changing): my baby boy was born in June, so that’s been wild but delightful, especially since he just started smiling this past week!
The second–I’ve got a story in the anthology Zombies: More Recent Dead from Prime Books coming out in September which I’m super excited about. My story’s in there next to Neil Gaiman’s! O.O I’m running a bunch of mini-interviews with my fellow ToC-ers over the next month or so, and getting to know them more has been fun, too. ๐
