The Sunday Circle: What Are You Working On This Week?

Sunday Circle Banner

The Sunday Circle is the weekly check-in where I ask the creative-types who follow this blog to weigh in about their goals, inspirations, and challenges for the coming week. The logic behind it can be found here. Want to be involved? It’s easy – just answer three questions in the comments or on your own blog (with a link in the comments here, so that everyone can find them).

After that, throw some thoughts around about other people’s projects, ask questions if you’re so inclined. Be supportive above all.

Then show up again next Sunday when the circle updates next, letting us know how you did on your weekly project and what you’ve got coming down the pipe in the coming week (if you’d like to part of the circle, without subscribing to the rest of the blog, you can sign-up for reminders via email here).

MY CHECK-IN

What am I working on this week?

Short story rewrites for the short piece I finished last Sunday. It’s a chaotic week, filled with book launches and other distractions, so I’m intentionally keeping the goals easy 🙂

What’s inspiring me this week?

While I’ve got no particular interest in playing Pokemon Go, I’ve been talking to people who are playing and engaging with a lot of the commentary surrounding it. It’s an incredibly intriguing phenomenon, in that it’s the first really large-scale augmented reality event that has a noticeable impact on on public spaces.

Overland’s essays, in particular, have been fascinating reading. I recommend checking out tbe essays on Pokemon Go and the Situationists and, particularly, the politics of digital gaming in public.

What part of my project an I avoiding?

I’ve been avoiding edits for the last four days, on account of…well, at this point it’s best described as “2016 doing its thing.” The next few weeks are going to be more interesting than planned, so I need to get a bit better at making time for writing things than I usually am.

MY CHECK-IN

What am I working on this week?

I’m heading away on holidays in six days time, so this week is all about getting some blog posts drafted and finishing off the current chapter of the novel draft before I spend ten days away from the keyboard.

What’s inspiring me this week?

The Netflix original series, Love, which is one of those series that takes advantage of the binge-watching habits that come with online streaming services.  The shift in the way series are paced and structured is really interesting.

Also, inexplicably, finding myself addicted to the first season of Hart of Dixie.

What part of my project an I avoiding?

Started messing with my routines last week and lost a little focus, which meant I haven’t sat down to write as much as I’d like. I’m looking at putting some focus on the routine this week, making sure I sit down to write regularly even if I don’t get much done.

The Sunday Circle: What Are You Working On This Week?

Sunday Circle Bannerunday. The day of rest. The day of having a sleep in and getting the laundry done. MY CHECK-IN

What am I working on this week? Still going through the opening chapters of Space Marines: Pew! Pew! Pew! Eschewing my usual goals of trying to hit a specific plot-point and getting back to basics – I want to spend 14 hours on the manuscript over the next week, as measured by RescueTime (which only counts the active typing time, not the sitting in the space and staring time).

What’s inspiring me this week? The most recent episode of NXT on the WWE Network. It’s hard to explain the brilliance of this show if you’re not a wrestling fan, but in terms of concise character work, it was phenomenal. Wrestlers will get, maybe, a minute of promo time to get over their characters and conflicts every week, which means they need to embrace economy and really focus what they’re doing. This often goes wrong, or comes off as lame. This week had a whole bunch of short promos that were brilliant.

What part of my project an I avoiding? There’s a series of clunky action scenes that need to be fixed and I’m avoiding them ’cause I hate action scenes. Which may be a failing, in an action-oriented Space Marine book.
